Veterinary Student Scholarships

The Veterinary Student Scholarship program of the American Kennel Club was established more than a decade ago. It has continued to grow and at the present time, $145,000 is available for scholarships each year. This is made possible through contributions of $100,000 from AKC Companion Animal Recovery (AKC-CAR) and $45,000 allocated by the AKC Board of Directors. The American Kennel Club, AKC Companion Animal Recovery, and the AKC Veterinary Outreach program are pleased to be able to support the veterinary practitioners and researchers of the future.

For the 2007-2008 school year, we distributed a Chairman's Award and a President's Award of $15,000 each.  The Dr. Asa Mays Award was given out in the amount of $15,000. Twenty AKC CAR awards of $5,000 each were also distributed.

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement, activities with purebred dogs or related research, and need. All applicants must be enrolled as full time students at an accredited United States veterinary medical school.

Scholarship application materials are sent to all accredited veterinary schools each January. We request that each school select four candidates and return the completed applications to the AKC in May. Applications are not accepted from individuals, and interested students should contact the financial aid office at their schools. The AKC selection committee reviews all the applications and selects recipients in June.
